Wood Engraving

As a kind of sculpture, it is generally carved with fine and tough trees that are not easily deformed. Originating in the Neolithic period., Chinese wood engraving was inscribed on the List of National Intangible Cultural Heritage of China in 2008. It can be divided into three categories: three-dimensional round carving, root carving and relief.

The root carving is based on the natural or distortion form of the roots (including tree tumors, bamboo roots,etc.). Images of people, animals and objects can be created by conceptually artistic and technological processing.

The three-dimensional round carving is based on animals and can be appreciated in multiple directions at various angles.

The relief will make the undulating images on the plane and is an artistic expression between the sculpture and the painting.

Wood engraving crafts are widely applied and decorated in various forms. Wooded products, decorated with woodcarvings are also common. Wood engraving is also applied in other crafts, such as jade, tooth carving, cloisonné, vases, pots, agate, jade, jewelry, porcelain, etc. to complement and enrich artworks themselves and add artistic charm.
